A brutal assault by suspected supporters of Golden Dawn on members of the Communist Party (KKE) late on Thursday in Perama, near Piraeus, was led by three known members of the ultra-right party who have been detained by police in the past, sources said Friday.

One of the three suspects is reportedly a party member who was implicated in another attack in Perama in June last year on four Egyptian fishermen.

Sources told Kathimerini that police officers visited the homes of the suspects in the early hours of yesterday morning but failed to find them there.

Nine people were taken to the hospital after a group of around 30 assailants, believed to be Golden Dawn members or supporters, attacked around 20 members of KKE who had been putting up posters on Perama’s Leoforos Dimokratias (Democracy Avenue). Witnesses said the assailants used metal clubs and wooden poles, some of which had nails stuck into the end of them.

KKE called the assault “devious and murderous,” and called on poor and unemployed Greeks to isolate “fascist thugs.”

The assault was condemned by all political parties except conservative New Democracy which leads the ruling coalition. PASOK spoke of an “unprovoked murderous attack by neo-Nazis,” while the main leftwing opposition SYRIZA described Golden Dawn as “a cowardly Nazi gang.”
