In the first week of February, 2025, Donald Trump hosted Benjamin Netanyahu in the White House to a backdrop of thunderous protests of the Palestinian and anti-imperialist movement all over the United States. At the same time, Trump remarked on the “beautiful ocean-front property of Gaza” and proposed moving the 2.2 million residents elsewhere for settlement in a joint effort by Israel and the United States.
Normally, one could chalk this up to Mr. Trump’s fatuous and infamous bluster, (see Trump’s performative tariffs, the proposed annexations of Greenland and Canada, and an invasion of Mexico) but unfortunately for the people of Palestine and for peace, Trump’s gluttony has very real implications regarding Gaza.
It is no coincidence that, in his first term, Trump moved the U.S. embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, encouraged Netanyahu’s government to “finish the job” against the Palestinian people, and continued to fund and support Israel in its skirmishes, raids, and colonization efforts in the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Gaza Strip. In fact, Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, made a substantial part of his wealth (outside of taxpayer subsidies) through his investments in a development firm that financed illegal Israeli settlements all over Palestine.
Trump’s hosting of Netanyahu has very serious practical implications, too, as Trump approved the sale of previously banned “bunker-buster” munitions that have the potential to wreak absolute havoc on urbanized environments. This is a very peculiar concession to Israel; it is very odd that, in the midst of a supposed ceasefire, the Israeli state is petitioning its imperialist sponsor in Washington for city-killing munitions! All of this rhetoric, all the practical measures redoubled to support Israel in the future, portend continued complicity of the American ruling class with the barbarism of the Israeli ruling class.
The American Party of Labor, and all the pro-Palestine masses of the United States and the world, have nothing but wholehearted condemnation for this naked aggression and exploitation. We declare our unreserved resistance to any attempt to continue or innovate the sale of arms, and we will continue our work from universities to the dockyard, and before Washington itself, to expose these maneuvers, and arrest this attempt to turn the Palestinian nation into a resort suburb for a gaggle of billionaires and millionaires.
