Christine Geovanis (1959–2024): Comrade, Sister, Fighter, Friend

Comrade Christine Geovanis has died. Comrade Christine (Chris) was a life-long Chicago resident and activist. Starting while she was still in grade school, Chris became a passionate champion for the rights of the Palestinian people to peace, freedom, and national sovereignty. She helped found and support non-profit organizations and small community-based organizations, challenged the corrupt Daley political machine, and served as Communications Director for the Chicago Teachers Union.

Together with her life partner, comrade Dick Reilly (deceased, 2020), Chris founded HammerHard MediaWorks and Chicago Indymedia, two alternative news media sites providing community-driven journalism free of corporate interests. They also helped found Chicago Coalition Against War and Racism, an organization mobilizing opposition to the US invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq in 2003. A talented photographer, Comrade Chris helped to document and support peoples’ causes such as the protests at Standing Rock against the Dakota Access Pipeline, Black Lives Matter and Occupy Chicago, opposition to the presence of Greek and Ukrainian fascist organizations in Chicago, most of all, solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people.

Comrade Chris was beloved and respected by all who knew her. Her passing has left a void in our hearts. However, we take comfort in the knowledge that another red star has joined the heavens, and that she still, and forever will, illuminate the struggle for peace, justice, democracy, and socialism.
