On June 29 and 30, the 32nd NATO Summit took place in Spain, an meeting that brought together 30 allied countries of Asia-Pacific, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel; and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in addition to the ministers of Jordan, Mauritania and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
NATO, in its resolutions, increased its military presence throughout Europe. All discussions, in the end, focused on seeking that the North Atlantic agreement be oriented to establish a world arms market, starting from the principle that wars imply a greater accumulation of profits for companies and corporations engaged in the manufacture and export of armaments, with the addition that the current Russia-Ukraine conflict is deliberately seeking to replace one of the actors in its role as the second largest arms exporting power globally.
The Summit condemned the invasion of Ukraine in an interested way, since NATO is a belligerent party in the war. Thus this condemnation is not neutral, since it aims to deepen the contention in the perspective of expanding influence and domination in the disputed region. In this scenario and without much surprise, they are preparing to forge a supposed unity in the attempt to stop the ability of destruction of Putin’s Russia. After hypocritically urging peace in Europe, they have not been able to hide their real arms interest by stating that global energy and food security are threatened. Behind this is the brazen discourse of the large US arms companies that have increased their sales by 26% since the beginning of the year, achieving a net profit of almost $2 billion, which they expect to increase much more over the next quarter.
The provision of Russian weapons to the military front has been privileged, so, during the Summit, the leaders agreed to increase the funds by many millions, knowing that the typical interests of the imperialist powers are involved, among which are those of defending and guaranteeing the region put at risk by the war in Ukraine. The NATO meeting sought to hide the true inter-imperialist interests around the redivision of vast geographical areas of the planet, for which they propose to increase military personnel from 100,000 to 300,000, of which 100,000 would be from the United States.
On the incorporation of Sweden and Finland into NATO, it is clear that, in the end, they are interested in encircling their now declared main enemy, Russia, in an unconcealable arms race that, hypocritically, they are trying to hide under a false international order because in the end they are interested in war, not peace. The Summit is part of the game of the imperialist bloc in the framework of the struggle between the powers and where they have placed Russia and China as their main adversaries.
The NATO Summit has determined policies of military cooperation for the benefit of world finance capital, above the poverty that plagues the whole world. All this shows the character of the North Atlantic Organization as an instrument at the service of imperialist interests. The crisis of the capitalist world can only be resolved through the unity of the peoples of the world in the search for a new international order in favour of the poor and exploited.
