THE UN Security Council says it is ready for a bloc of West African countries to submit a detailed plan for military intervention to root out Islamists who have seized control of Mali’s northern region.
The Security Council called on Friday on the Economic Community of West African States to prepare a “feasible” plan for a force, which the African Union and UN would support.
Mali’s interim government recently requested military intervention, including aerial support and five battalions, for its troubled northern region.
The leaders of a March coup, who retain considerable influence, had previously opposed foreign intervention.
The council also said Mali’s security and humanitarian crises have worsened.
