FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Occupy Omaha Disowns Americans for Prosperity Debate
Omaha, Nebraska – February 2, 2012 – On Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, Bellevue University is hosting an event advertised as a debate between Occupy Omaha and Americans for Prosperity. Occupy Omaha’s General Assembly had no involvement in the planning of the event and was not aware of its existence until it was publicly announced.
Americans for Prosperity, a Koch Brothers-funded propaganda machine, has described the event as a debate between ‘a leader from Occupy Omaha’ and their state director. It has long been known that only the General Assembly speaks for Occupy Omaha and that we have no individual leaders. As such, the promoters’ use of the Occupy Omaha name is illegitimate.
The event was discussed for the first time at our Feb. 1 General Assembly, three days before the event, and the General Assembly voted unanimously to disown the event and request that the organizers not use our name in conjunction with it. Any Occupy Omaha affiliates who participate in the event represent themselves and are not authorized to speak for Occupy Omaha.
We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
